World Class Orthopedic Care at Home in Southwest Montana. (406) 586-8029

Emily Harnden, MD

Emily Harnden, MD believes in a team approach to patient care. A dual-fellowship trained Orthopedic Surgeon, she completed fellowships in both Sports Medicine and Foot and Ankle surgery before joining Alpine Orthopedics in 2018.

Dr. Harnden has expertise in all disorders of the foot and ankle including deformity, degenerative disease, sports-related injuries, and traumatic injuries. She performs open foot and ankle reconstructive surgery, arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures, and treatment of foot and ankle arthritis including total ankle replacements. She also treats sports-related and degenerative conditions of the knee and hip, specializing in open and arthroscopic knee reconstruction procedures, knee replacements, and hip replacements using the anterior approach.

She earned her BA at Stanford University, her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Southern California, and completed her Orthopedic Surgery residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle. She followed that training with two subspecialty fellowships: the first in Sports Medicine at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in Taos, NM and the second in Foot and Ankle surgery at the Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA. She is also a physician for the US Ski Team and has worked with athletes from both the men’s and women’s Alpine teams.

Dr. Harnden uses a shared-decision making model when caring for her patients. She empowers her patients to take an active role in their treatment, assuring they have the information to make informed choices about their care. She also works closely with physical therapists and trainers to ensure her patients achieve their best possible outcome. She strives to create individual treatment plans to help patients meet their specific goal, whether that be to walk their dog pain-free on trails around town or to return to professional or elite-level sports.

When not working, Dr. Harnden is an avid skier and mountain biker, spending as much time as she can outdoors with her husband and yellow lab. She is honored to have the opportunity to provide the most up-to-date and evidence-based care to her patients in Southwest Montana and beyond.
